Morning all. I'm in the market for a new wheel for my 6" bench grinder. It will be used to re do the primary bevel on my chisels. I tried that with the stones that came with the grinder but I don't care for the results. Final bevel will be done with a 1000-4000 wet stone. After a bit of research I think I'm looking at an aluminum oxide wheel, 60-80 grit.

My 6" CM grinder just died and I am in the market for a new one. I'm looking at the 8" slow-speed grinder from WC for fast steel removal. My question is whether there is a big difference in the hollow grind in going from an 8" wheel to a 10" wheel since I just got the Grizzly 10" wet-grinder to set the final bevel before going to stones/sandpaper.

A hollow grind does not shorten the blade, or produce a burr. That work is done at one's honing stones. You don't need a CBN wheel to hollow grind. A $15 coarse wheel does the job just fine, if you understand what hollow grinding means in the first place.

Grinder wheels - just like the wheels on your car - need to be balanced to run smoothly. The way to balance a wheel is to make a mark (draw a line from the centre to the perimeter) and then rotate the wheel slightly (loosen the nut, move the wheel, tighten again). Keep doing this until you get the least amount of vibration. Do both wheels.

A hollow grind will effectively create a smaller included angle at the cutting edge for a given measured angle, smaller for an 8" wheel than a 10" wheel. Since the larger included angle is a bit more stable than a smaller angle, perhaps your skew would be more like your previous flat grind if you simply increased the bevel angle a bit.
